One of Nepal’s oldest heritage region Upper Mustang Trekking is closely related with Tibetan culture. In this stark landscape trekkers encounter medieval town, surrounded by huge wall with some of oldest sculptures. Equally important the last resort of Upper Mustang Trek is Lo Manthang and is also believed to be the old Buddhist kingdom. Additionally there is an old 4-story royal palace with Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri mountains in background. Stark Tibetan Landscapes, golden rice fields, Hindu shrines with cliff hanging monasteries, ruggedly carved mountains reaching the blue sky. In addition glittery icy peaks to the south, vast and barren ridges extending to the northern horizon and its significant horizon turns dream of an avid adventure seeker in to reality.
Furthermore the Monasteries of 16th century still are active and preserving the magnificent Trans Himalayan Kingdom. These historical structures have some of great unrivaled piece of creations like thangka, mandalas and deities.
Itinerary of Upper Mustang Trekking
Day 01: Arrive in Kathmandu [1300 m / 4264 ft] Upon arrival in Kathmandu airport our office representative will transfer you to your hotel. After check in you can either take a rest then afterwards take a stroll around the city.
Day 02: Kathmandu sightseeing and trek preparation.
After breakfast we start a guided tour in Kathmandu. Specifically some of these landmarks include World Heritage Sites; historic Durbar Square, sacred Hindu temple of Pashupati Nath, famous ‘Monkey Temple’ (Swayambhunath) and Buddhists shrine (Bauddha Nath) one of largest stupa in the world. Subsequently in the afternoon, there will be a pre-trip discussion where we will meet our trek leader and fellow team members.
Day 03: Kathmandu to Pokhara [823m/2,700ft]: 6 hrs drive/fly 30 min
Today we will travel to Pokhara. This touristic city offers magnificent view of the Himalayas namely Machhapuchhare, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, five peaks of Annapurna and others. Similarly you can also explore the beautiful Fewa Lake and enjoy boating here during afternoon. Afterward in the evening you can stroll around and explore, relax and dine by lake shore. You can find multiple outlets around this area for souvenir and other items. Overnight at hotel in Pokhara.
Day 04: Fly to Jomsom & trek to Kagbeni [2,858m/9,375ft]: 3-4 hrs
An early morning breakfast and afterwards transfer to airport for flight to Jomsom. A super scenic flight of 20 minutes over the mountains with views of 8,000ers such as Annapurna & Dhaulagiri, brings you at Jomsom, district headquarter of Mustang. Subsequently from Jomsom onward it is very windy during the afternoon. Later we continue gradual path on Kali Gandaki river bed for about 3 hrs and reach Ekley-bhatti village. We then continue to Kagbeni which lies at the bank of two rivers. In fact Kagbeni is an interesting windswept villages situated on the main age old Trans-Himalayan salt trade route to Tibet via Upper Mustang area. Overnight at tea house.
Day 05: Kagbeni to Chele [3050m/10,004ft]: 5-6 hrs
After breakfast we go for special permit check. Afterwards we trek onward the riverbank of Kaligandaki river. During the walk we will view scenic picturesque place throughout the sandy and windy trails. This trails follows the up and downhill. Nevertheless we reach Tangbe village with narrow alleys amongst white washed houses, fields of buckwheat, barley, wheat and apple orchards. Immediately from there we trek forward to Chhusang and after crossing the river we head up. Subsequently we come across a huge red chunk of conglomerate that had fallen from the cliff above forming a tunnel through which the Kaligandaki follows. Finally we head on to small ridge and reach Chele village. Overnight at tea house.
Day 06: Chele to Syanbochen [3475m/11,398ft]: 6-7 hrs
Today, we start our trek around 8am walk to Eklo Bhatti. We then climb to Taklam La Pass (3,624m/11,923 ft) which offers view of namely Tilicho Peak, Yakawa Kang and Damodar Danda. Later we climb the trail that goes above Samar village to the ridge then descend steeply to a stream. After another 3 hrs of similar walk we reach Syanbochen. On the way we also pass by the famous Ramchung Cave. Overnight at tea house.
Day 07: Syanbochen to Ghaymi [3520m/11,546ft]: 5-6 hrs
After breakfast we trek uphill to Yamda La (3,850m /12,667ft) passing few tea houses, chortens and local villages. They are mainly like Tibetan styled houses with open veranda. We also cross mountain passes, and an avenue of poplar trees and fields of Barley. The climb to Nyi Pass (4,010m/13,193ft) would be a little longer. Afterwards we descend to the third largest village in the Lo region Ghaymi. Overnight stop at Ghyami.
Day 08: Ghaymi to Charang [3500m/11,480ft]: 4-5 hrs
Start the trek after breakfast with a pleasant walk. After crossing Ghaymi Khola, the trail climbs to a plateau and passes beside a long Mani wall, a sacred stone wall made by followers of Buddhism. Immediately after stone wall the trail heads east to the village of Charang with fields of maze, willow trees and houses separated by stone walls at the top of Tsarang Chu canyon.
Day 09: Charang to Lo Manthang (3700m/12,136ft): 5-6 hrs
Today, we trek to Lo Manthang with view of Nilgiri, Tilicho, Annapurna I and Bhrikuti peak. The trail firstly descends to Charang Chu Canyon and then climbs steeply after crossing the river. Further this trail ascends gently windy pass of Lo (3,850m) from where you can see the Lo Manthang Valley. While descending to Lo Manthang, views of the walled city appear magnificent with hills on the Tibetan border. Overnight at tea house .
Day 10: Explore Lo Manthang
Today we explore surrounding area of Lo Manthang. Also we will visit Namgyal Gompa and Tingkhar. Namgyal Gompa situated on a hilltop which serves as an important monastery of local community and also as a local court. After visiting Namgyal Gompa we head further towards Tingkhar, the last main village to the northwest of Lo Manthang. Afterwards we head back to hotel. Also we have options to visit tall Champa Lakhang “God house” the red Thugchen Gompa, Chyodi Gompa and the Entrance Hall which are main attractions of this town. Similarly another attraction is the four-storey building of Raja’s palace as well as surrounding panoramic views of Himalayas.
Day 11: Lo-Mangthang to Dhakmar [3810 m/12,500ft]: 6-7 hrs
Trek to Dhakmar via Gyakar with more than 1200 years old Ghar Gompa with Guru Rinpoche as primary figure. Specifically the Gompa is also famous for its rock paintings. Legend has it that anyone who makes one wish at the Ghar Gompa is fulfilled. Afterward we explore nearby surrounding.
Day 12: Dhakmar to Ghiling [3806m/12,484ft]: 5-6 hrs
Today we start our trek from Dhakmar to Ghiling for about 5-6 hours. Overnight at Ghiling.
Day 13: Ghiling to Chhuksang [3050m/10,004ft]: 5-6 hrs
We trek from Ghiling to Chhuksang. The walking trail is mainly flat and downhill. It takes about 5 hrs walk. You will have wonderful scenery including Himalayan view during todays’ journey.
Day 14: Chhuksang to Jomsom [2700/8,856ft]: 7-8 hrs
Today is the last stage of this trek. We will have to walk for almost 7-8 hours during the trek which is relatively longest as compared to other days’ during this trek. We will have lunch at Kagbeni and head towards Jomsom. Overnight at tea house.
Day 15: Fly back to Pokhara. Drive/fly Pokhara to Kathmandu.
After morning breakfast we check in the airport to fly back to Pokhara. Subsequently upon arrival at Pokhara we will be catching another flight to Kathmandu. Overnight at hotel.
Day 16: Drop to International airport.
After breakfast depending on your schedule transfer to International Airport.
